Today I was once again amazed by the effect that meditation can have on a person’s life. The health benefits of meditation like lowered oxygen consumption, increased blood flow and and slowed heart rate, deeper levels of relaxation, lowered blood pressure, increased serotonin production which elevates mood and many more, are well documented. Almost every health problem in our society are related to stress. The two biggest causes of death in western society, cancer and heart attack, is due to stress. Many people think these diseases and other starts in the body, but in fact they originate in the mind. It is impossible to get sick when your emotions are loving and harmonious.

Science knows by now that the body and the mind are not two separate entities, they are connected in a very real way and the term which they use is the bodymind or the mind/body connection. The effects of happy thoughts on the body are also well documented. Happy thought creates a happy body. Therefor it is extremely important to be happy and stress free to live a long, happy life. To have no stress at all is very difficult, but it can almost completely be eliminated through meditation. There is no doubt that life can be extremely challenging and that there are millions of people living under severe stress every day.

Just yesterday I was experiencing a big amount of heartache and stress. Stress and anxiety has always been a part of my life, although it has lessened to a large extent over the years. Yet there are still moments that it all becomes a little too much for me. We live in times where stress and suffering is almost inevitable, unless we can find a ’secret weapon’ to fight it. When I talk about stress I talk about anything that causes pain, suffering, anxiety, sadness and depression. All these thing are bad for your health and make life not worth living. If there is no way to get rid of these things then life would be pointless.

Now I am well aware that different people have different ways to release stress, and you should do whatever works for you. Yet it is the fact that meditation and exercise are probably the two most potent ways to fight stress and disease. For example  I have something going on in my personal life that is causing me a lot of sadness and suffering. But of late I have been experimenting with visualization during meditation, and therefor it hasn’t been having the same effect. Today I just decided to meditate as I always did, which is basically to focus on my breathing and empty my mind. And I was amazed by the effect it had.

It seemed during my meditation I dealt with those feelings that was constantly eating away at me, when I felt them I just allowed them to be, I didn’t fight them. When I had finished meditation I literally felt like a new person, like I had many times in the past. That is what inspired me to write this post. Immediately I am feeling more positive and I have happier thoughts, the sadness have dissipated, at least to a large extent. In this way meditation is a great way to clean you emotional body of toxins, just as exercise cleans your physical body of toxins. We have all built up emotional toxins from the past when we were hurt and we continue to build them up during our daily lives.

If these toxins are allowed to stay in the bodymind they create disease in the long run. Again this is because the mind and body are connected, not separate. By meditating on a regular basis you rid your emotional body from past hurts and sadness and you also prevent further emotional toxins from building up and poisoning your bodymind. I speak from experience when I say life can be extremely challenging and at times it all seems pointless. But it seems I have rediscovered my secret spiritual weapon. Life can be impossible at times, it can be a total nightmare. Especially in the times we live in. We live in complicated, stressful times and at times it can feel like life is choking you to death.

I’ve felt lke this many times in my life, in fact most of the time. But I write this post with great hope and optimism. For me meditation is like the ultimate saviour, it helps me to keep things in perspective. It simplifies everything and prevents me from losing myself in the things of this world. This world is all just the passing scenery, it’s not even real because it can never last. What is real is you inner self. When you meditate you come into contact with this part of yourself, and the more you do it the more you will become immortal and invincible yourself. It’s just a question of perspective.

How to meditate: If you can afford it it will be good to find a professional who can teach you to meditate, but it’s not necessary. I have never gone to a professional, I teached myself through what I read in books. I keep it very simple. I simply find a quiet place where I won’t be disturbed, sit in a comfortable position and focus on my breathing. At the start there are many thoughts, but as I keep focusing on me breathing my inner dialogue becomes more and more silent. If any particular feelings come up I just allow them to be. If any thoughts come up I release them. Simple as that. It doesn’t have to be a complicated ritual and there isn’t one specific way it has to be done. Some people meditate when they are in nature. But I prefer this ritual which I do for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the afternoon.

Deepak Chopra, medical doctor, speaker and author of several international bestsellers, says meditation is the most important practise in his life. It keeps him calm and centered under pressure. Here is another simple meditation technique explained by Deepak :
