Can We Start Over if We Wanted to?
This question recently came to me when it occurred to me that there were certain things in my past that I wanted to change, and I wondered whether it was possible to start over if I wanted to. Although there are people who live fulfilling lives, I think a lot of people, if not everyone, would take back or change certain things if they could. The truth is that we can’t start over, but not for the reasons you think. We can’t start over because we never started in the first place. Many people think we start when we are born, but this is a mistake. We have always been and we will always be. There is no beginning or end, first or last, past or future.
You don’t begin when you are born and end when you die. That would imply that you are your body, and this is not the case. You are not your body. Your body is just a vehicle for your soul on it’s evolutionary journey. When you are born your soul enters your body, and when you die the body is dropped. The soul cannot be defined in terms of time and space because it has always been and will always be, and it is everywhere at all times and nowhere in particular. Therefor the soul is not within the body as many people think, but the body is within the soul. The soul is infinitely more real than the body.
The body that you occupy at present will last most probably not more than a 100 years, yet your soul has always existed. There was never a time when it did not exist. This is a hard concept to grasp because our minds tend to think in terms of time and space. If something(the soul) exists, then it must have been created at some point. But then again the soul is not something. It isn’t made of any substance. The soul can be intellectually understood, but it can be felt. The soul can be felt while communing with nature for instance, or during meditation. The soul must be looked for however.
You won’t find the timeless part of yourself by being caught up in this world of things 24/7. Time need to be set aside for spiritual practice and communion with your soul. What does all of this have to do with starting over? If time and space is an illusion then there is only one moment, and that is NOW. If there is only this moment, then you don’t need to start over do you? In fact you can’t. This moment is all that ever existed and all that will ever exist. The implications of this are enormous. Once you realize that this moment is all there is, and become one with it, you won’t need to start over, have regrets or make mistakes. These are all just illusions.
